Reproductive Senescence in Two Lemur Lineages

چکیده
The relationship between age and reproductive performance is highly variable across species. Humans some cetaceans exhibit an extreme form of senescence in that female reproduction ceases years or even decades before average life expectancy reached. However, neither the existence taxa nor its absence others fully understood. Comparative data from other long-lived mammals may contribute to a more comprehensive understanding evolution menopause, but wild primates, particular, are scarce. We therefore investigated age-related two sympatric populations Malagasy primates: Verreaux’s sifakas ( Propithecus verreauxi ) redfronted lemurs Eulemur rufifrons ), which have maximal longevity than 20 years. Based on 25 long-term demographic data, we extracted information output 38 42 lemurs. modeled variation interbirth intervals as function age, number adult females within group account for competition, rainfall proxy annual food availability. also compared our results these species with captive same genera buffered fluctuations environmental variables. Our analyses disclosed statistical evidence three out four (captive Coquerel’s sifakas, lemurs, red lemurs) not sifakas. Compared populations, was less pronounced animals, though latter adversities. In mothers were likely give birth rainfall, co-resident females, did predict probability giving Thus, study contributes valuable comparative basal offers insights into modulating effects environmental, social phylogenetic factors patterns dynamics age-specific reproduction.

Lemur habitat and dental senescence in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar.
Not only can teeth provide clues about diet, but they also can be indicators of habitat quality. Conspecific groups living in different habitats with different kinds of foods may exhibit different rates of dental attrition because their teeth are less well adapted to some foods than to others. Ecological disequilibrium describes the situation in which animals live in habitats to which they are ...
متن کاملEpigenetic reprogramming in plant reproductive lineages.
Monoecious flowering plants produce both microgametophytes (pollen) and megagametophytes (embryo sacs) containing the male and female gametes, respectively, which participate in double fertilization. Much is known about cellular and developmental processes giving rise to these reproductive structures and the formation of gametes. However, little is known about the role played by changes in the ...
متن کاملTwo routes to senescence revealed by real-time analysis of telomerase-negative single lineages
In eukaryotes, telomeres cap chromosome ends to maintain genomic stability. Failure to maintain telomeres leads to their progressive erosion and eventually triggers replicative senescence, a pathway that protects against unrestricted cell proliferation. However, the mechanisms underlying the variability and dynamics of this pathway are still elusive. Here we use a microfluidics-based live-cell ...
متن کاملReproductive isolation between Pogonomyrmex rugosus and two lineages with genetic caste determination.
Hybrid speciation occurs when combination of two interspecific genomes results in individuals that are of high fitness but reproductively incompatible with the parental species. Although hybrid speciation is a relatively common source of new species in plants, it appears to be a much rarer occurrence in animal taxa. Here we report on reproductive isolation and range overlap between the rough ha...
متن کاملFood procurement and tooth use in two sympatric lemur species.
This study of two lemur species (Lemur catta and Propithecus v. verreauxi) in Madagascar combines observations of food procurement and initial food placement in the mouth with comparisons to food toughness and external properties. Food toughness was hypothesized to play a decisive role in determining food placement during ingestion. It was found that tougher foods are generally ingested on the ...
